Serve on the WPSA Executive Council

The Western Political Science Association is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Executive Council is the WPSA’s legal governing board. The main way in which members are chosen to serve on the council is by having their names placed on the election ballot by the WPSA Nominations Committee; the election vote takes place at the association’s annual business meeting.

Every year, the association elects five individuals to serve on the council:

VICE-PRESIDENT: Immediately after being elected, begins serving on the council as vice- president elect. The following year, serves as program chair for the annual meeting. In the third year, serves as the association’s president.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEMBERS: Council members are elected by region and serve for three-year terms. Their service on the council begins one-year after being elected. Each year, two members are elected from Region A (California); one from Region B (Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah); and one from Region C (Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan). Nominees who are not residents in the western region are assigned randomly by the Nominations Committee to one of the three regional groupings.

Every three years, the association elects two other individuals to serve on the council:

RECORDING SECRETARY: Three-year term, which begins one-year after being elected. Future election years include 2027, 2030, 2033, and every three years thereafter.

TREASURER: Three-year term, which begins one year after being elected. Future election years include 2026, 2029, 2032, and every three years thereafter.

Please use this form to nominate someone to serve on the council. Nominations should be received by June 15 of the preceding year. Self-nominations are welcome. You have to be a member in good standing to serve on the council. We encourage nominations of women and members of ethnic minorities (including women of color) and nominations that help achieve a balance of large and small schools, areas of specialization, and regions in WPSA governance.
